THE PURPLE HEART
"The Badge Of Military Merit"

Given in honor to all that have served in combat in the service of this great nation, and who have shed their blood or given the ultimate sacrifice to become one in the Brotherhood of the Purple Heart

"For He Today That Shed His Blood With Me
Shall Be My Brother Forever".

The Purple Heart is an American decoration and is the oldest military award decoration in the world in present use. Initially created as the Badge of Military Merit.
The original Purple Heart, designated as the Badge of Military Merit, was established by General George Washington by order from his headquarters at Newburgh, New York on 7 August 1782.
The writings of General Washington quoted in part:
"The General ever desirous to cherish a virtuous ambition in his soldiers, as well as to foster and encourage every species of Military Merit, directs that whenever any singularly meritorious action is performed, the author of it shall be permitted to wear on his facings over the left breast, the figure of a heart in purple cloth or silk, edged with narrow lace or binding. Not only instances of unusual gallantry, but also of extraordinary fidelity and essential service in any way shall
meet with a due reward".

General Washington is often pictured as a cold, stern soldier. Yet it is known that he showed sympathy and concern for his troops, and was not too proud to pray humbly on his knees for his beloved country and for the men who served it, and him, so bravely and loyally.
Let us too then, humble ourselves in like manner for our troops, our country and the men and women who have earned the honor of the Brotherhood of the Purple Heart.
